8-Year-Old Genius Beats Grandmaster
Young Ashwath Kaushik beat the previous record
Eight-year-old Ashwath Kaushik from Singapore made headlines on Sunday as he became the youngest player to ever defeat a top chess player in a classical tournament game. His historic achievement occurred during the "Burgdorfer Stadthaus Open" in Switzerland, where he defeated 37-year-old Polish player Jacek Stopa in the fourth round.
Ashwath's triumph comes just a month after then-eight-year-old Leonid Ivanovic set the previous record. However, Ashwath surpassed Ivanovic by five months, making him the youngest to ever accomplish this feat.
Reflecting on his win, Ashwath expressed excitement and pride, particularly in his ability to navigate through tough positions during the game.
Despite his young age, Ashwath has already turned heads in the world of chess, winning numerous youth tournaments, including the Rapid Under-8 World Championship in 2022.
