European Parliament Welcomes USB-C as the Standard Charging Port for Devices in the EU
Standardized Ports Aim to Reduce E-Waste and Benefit Consumers
As of today, all new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, speakers, keyboards, and other electronic devices sold in the European Union must be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port, the European Parliament announced on the X platform this Saturday.
The standardized charging port will apply to devices "regardless of manufacturer, benefiting both consumers’ wallets and the environment," according to the announcement.
The European Parliament approved the legislation in October 2022 as part of the EU’s broader initiative to reduce electronic waste and empower consumers to make more sustainable choices.
From the spring of 2026, this compliance requirement will also extend to laptops.
