July 2023 Marked as Warmest Month in Four Decades, Says Cyprus Institute
Athalassa Station Reports Unprecedented 17-Day Heatwave
The Cyprus Institute announced in a recent press release that July 2023 stands as the hottest month in the last 40 years. The Copernicus Climate Change Service highlighted that this summer was globally the hottest recorded, with temperatures averaging 16.77°C, a notable 0.66°C above the standard.
In Cyprus, this surge in temperatures was even more pronounced. Data from the Department of Environmental Predictions at the Climate and Atmosphere Research Center of Excellence of the Cyprus Institute revealed that the average temperature at the Athalassa weather station in Nicosia reached an all-time high of 40.0°C in July. Furthermore, the month witnessed an uninterrupted 16-day stretch of soaring temperatures.
In a historical comparison, the Athalassa station reported 48 days in 2020 with temperatures surpassing 40.0°C - 30 of these days occurred in the summer, with the remainder spread across May, September, and October.
A striking detail from the summer of 2023 is the continuous high temperature streak from July 13 to 29, where each day experienced temperatures over 40.0°C. This 17-day span is a record in its own right for the past 41 years based on Athalassa station's data. The prior record was a ten-day stretch in both July 1987 and 2000.
