June Heatwave Sparks Record Electricity Demand in Cyprus

June Heatwave Sparks Record Electricity Demand in Cyprus

Electricity Demand Peaks at 1217MW; Higher Records Expected in Summer

The June heatwave has not only caused numerous problems but also led to a significant increase in electricity demand.

Specifically, on Friday, June 14, at 4 PM, the highest demand for 2024 was recorded, reaching 1217MW.

It's noteworthy that the highest demand ever recorded was 1243MW on Monday, July 24, 2023, at 2:30 PM. This record might be broken this July and August.

Speaking to Brief, Hara Kousiapa, Press Representative of the Electricity Transmission System Operator, stated that the figures recorded in June 2024 are comparable to those of July 2023. In the corresponding period of 2023, the demand was approximately 600MW-700MW, while in June 2024, the demand exceeded 1000MW, matching last July's numbers.

In response to a query, Ms. Kousiapa noted that there is an adequate electricity supply, as during the day, renewable energy sources (RES) generate over 700MW and conventional units produce approximately 1480MW. However, the concern lies in the nighttime demand when no electricity is produced from RES.

It should also be noted that there is an increase in demand during weekends. Last week, demand reached 1095MW on Saturday and 906MW on Sunday.
