Satellites Will Scan Earth Every 20 Minutes to Detect Wildfires
The FireSat Protoflight marks the first step in a global satellite network to monitor and detect wildfires from space.
A series of satellites will scan the entire Earth every 20 minutes to detect wildfires.
According to American media reports, this is the first satellite constellation specifically designed to monitor and detect wildfires globally, with full operation planned by 2030.
Three months ago, the FireSat Protoflight satellite was launched by the space company Muon Space, and the first images have now been released. FireSat is the first of a proposed constellation of more than 50 satellites that Muon Space aims to launch and deploy for global wildfire detection and monitoring.
The first images were captured from low Earth orbit. The satellite used a multispectral infrared instrument to scan areas with thermal characteristics that could indicate potential wildfires.
