2027: The Critical Year for Cyprus’ First Natural Gas Extraction

The next and most crucial stage—how to export gas to the markets—has never been addressed.

2027 will be a pivotal year for Cyprus as it marks the moment when the country's first natural gas is expected to surface and be transported to its designated destinations, stated Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry, George Papanastasiou.

"As the President of the Republic indicated yesterday in his 2025 planning, a visit is scheduled to personally underscore the significance of the agreement with Egypt," the Minister added.

He further described the signing of upcoming agreements as a "significant development," emphasizing that these agreements will enable the commercialization of Cyprus’ natural gas.

"Until now, discussions have primarily revolved around drilling and gas reserves. However, the next and most crucial stage—how to export gas to the markets—has never been addressed," he stated.

"At this moment, agreements are being signed to facilitate the gas market entry. That’s why having this agreement in place is essential," he continued. He noted that this process involves Egypt as the host country, the contractors who invested in these reserves, and the Republic of Cyprus, which seeks to place its natural gas on the global market.

The Energy Minister also explained that revenues generated from new sources, whether through investments or natural gas sales, will eventually be reinvested into the country’s economy.
