Biomedical Laboratories and Professionals in Cyprus: What Does the New Legislation Entail?
New Bills Aim to Regulate Biomedical Labs, Ensure Quality Services, and Define Professional Standards
The Council of Ministers approved today, Wednesday, a bill regulating the registration, operation, and oversight of biomedical and specialized biomedical laboratories, announced Health Minister Michalis Damianos. The Minister described the bill as a "particularly significant piece of legislation" for the healthcare sector in Cyprus.
In a statement following the Cabinet meeting, Minister Damianos emphasized that the bill had been under discussion among stakeholders and relevant authorities for over a decade. "The primary goal of the legislation is to ensure the quality of healthcare services provided to the citizens of our country," he said.
The legislation sets clear operational standards for biomedical and specialized laboratories offering complex services requiring advanced scientific and technical expertise. It defines necessary infrastructure requirements, including facilities, equipment, and staff qualifications, to guarantee the optimal functioning of laboratories.
Additionally, the bill mandates the accreditation of the methods used, ensuring that laboratory services meet the highest standards for patient care.
The Health Ministry, as the regulatory authority, will implement a supervisory mechanism to ensure compliance with the provisions of the proposed legislation, Minister Damianos added.
Alongside the bill for clinical laboratories, the Cabinet also approved legislation to regulate the profession of biomedical scientists. This includes establishing the Registration Council for Qualified Directors and Biomedical Scientists, which will oversee professional standards and certification.
The new regulations aim to formalize the qualifications and roles of professionals staffing biomedical and specialized laboratories, ensuring they meet defined professional criteria.
Minister Damianos urged the House of Representatives to expedite the passage of the submitted bills. He noted that additional important legislation would soon be presented by the Health Ministry, further supporting advancements in the country’s healthcare system.
