Cold Wave Tests Cyprus’s Energy Supply

Authorities Urge Energy Conservation as Power Grid Faces Strain During Peak Hours

The coming days are expected to be challenging for Cyprus’s energy supply due to an anticipated cold wave starting today, Thursday, according to Chará Kousiappa, spokesperson for the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC).

"It will be a difficult situation. We are already experiencing very high energy demand. We hope everything will go smoothly, but we are continuously assessing the situation and will take necessary actions accordingly,” Kousiappa stated to the Cyprus News Agency.

She added that TSOC is closely monitoring the situation and will reassess energy conditions once the cold wave arrives. If needed, further announcements will be made.

Kousiappa highlighted that TSOC is in constant communication with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) Production Division. She expressed hope that certain power units currently under repair will be restored to service before the drop in temperatures.

She noted that several units are currently offline due to scheduled maintenance, while others have experienced technical failures at the Dhekelia and Vasilikos power stations.

The most critical hours for electricity demand during this period will be between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM, when there is no contribution from renewable energy sources, Kousiappa warned.

To help prevent or minimize power shortages, she urged the public to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours whenever possible.

Additionally, she encouraged households to use high-energy appliances, such as washing machines and dishwashers, during daylight hours when solar energy production is at its peak.
