Construction Sector in Cyprus Faces Serious Shortage of Skilled Workers
Insights from Stelios Gabriel on Addressing the Industry's Pressing Challenge
Stelios Gabriel, President of the Cyprus Building Contractors Association, speaks of serious shortages of craftsmen in the construction sector.
Mr. Gabriel, in a conversation with Brief, mentioned that currently, there is a need for about 5,000 workers and craftsmen in construction, with the sector facing the same staffing issues as those in hospitality and catering.
The President of the Contractors Association explained that the problem began to emerge during the pandemic period, as many workers returned to their countries due to the suspension of construction site operations. Furthermore, Mr. Gabriel added that a significant number of asylum seekers who had been working in construction have also left Cyprus.
Mr. Gabriel explained that the lack of staff is due to the fact that Cypriots have largely lost interest in such work, with younger people now turning to other professions.

The President of the Contractors Association revealed to Brief that there are considerations for the Ministry of the Interior to conclude inter-state agreements to accelerate the process of attracting foreign personnel from third countries.
Specifically, as Mr. Gabriel mentioned, these considerations involve attracting workers from India, Egypt, and Armenia.
Asked about this, Mr. Gabriel noted that the best builders come from Syria, Indians are renowned in ironwork, and when it comes to plasterboards and wooden constructions, the Romanians have the best expertise.
Regarding remuneration in the construction sector, Mr. Gabriel stated that a laborer can start from €1750, while craftsmen earn over €2000.
