Electric and Hybrid Cars Surge as Petrol Vehicles Lose Ground in Cyprus

New data show a sharp shift in vehicle registrations during 2025.

The increase in the number of electric and hybrid vehicles continued in 2025, with the share of electric vehicles among passenger saloon cars rising from 4.0% in 2024 to 4.7% in 2025, while the share of hybrid vehicles increased from 37.1% to 44.3%.

By contrast, the share of petrol-powered passenger saloon cars declined to 42.0% in 2025 from 48.6% in 2024, while diesel-powered vehicles fell to 8.9%, down from 10.3% in 2024.

Specifically, according to the report “Registrations of Motor Vehicles” for the period January–December 2025, released on Monday by the Statistical Service, the total number of registered vehicles increased by 5.8% in 2025, reaching 52,508 compared with 49,616 in 2024.

Registrations of passenger saloon cars rose by 6.2% to 40,778, compared with 38,410 in the corresponding period of 2024.

Of the total number of passenger saloon cars, 14,633 or 35.9% were new vehicles, while 26,145 or 64.1% were used vehicles. Rental cars, in particular, recorded a significant increase of 32.4%, reaching 5,169 registrations.

Shift Towards Electric and Hybrid Vehicles

According to the Statistical Service, the share of petrol-powered passenger saloon cars in this category declined during the period January–December 2025 to 42.0% (from 48.6% in the same period of 2024), as did the share of diesel-powered vehicles (from 10.3% in 2024 to 8.9% in 2025).

In contrast, the share of electric vehicles increased from 4.0% in 2024 to 4.7% in 2025, while hybrid vehicles rose markedly from 37.1% to 44.3%.

In addition, registrations of buses increased to 181 during the period January–December 2025, from 133 in the corresponding period of 2024. Registrations of goods transport vehicles rose to 6,208 from 5,811 in the same period of 2024, representing an increase of 6.8%.

More specifically, rental goods vehicles increased by 23.8% to 291, light trucks by 6.9% to 4,959, road tractors (articulated vehicles) by 3.3% to 251, and heavy trucks by 1.7% to 707.

Registrations of mopeds under 50cc declined to 213 during the period January–December 2025, compared with 690 in the same period of 2024.

Registrations of motorcycles over 50cc increased by 14.5% to 4,467 during the period January–December 2025, compared with 3,903 in the corresponding period of 2024.

According to the Statistical Service, the main manufacturing countries of motor vehicles registered in Cyprus during 2025 were Japan (44.1%), Germany (13.0%), France (7.0%), the United Kingdom (6.0%), and South Korea (3.9%).

The most popular vehicle colour in 2025 was white, accounting for 34.4% of registrations, followed by grey (19.5%), black (15.6%), blue (8.8%), and silver (8.7%).

Annual Increase of 27.1% in December

In December 2025, according to the Statistical Service, total motor vehicle registrations reached 3,604, marking an annual increase of 27.1% compared with 2,836 in December 2024.

Registrations of passenger saloon cars increased by 36.6% to 2,801, up from 2,050 in December 2024.
