Electric Car Subsidy Disruption Under Scrutiny in Parliament
Transport Minister Faces Questions Over Sudden Halt to EV Grant Scheme Amid Market Uncertainty
The uproar caused by the sudden suspension of Cyprus’s electric vehicle (EV) subsidy scheme is back on the agenda today, as the Parliamentary Transport Committee reconvenes to discuss the issue. Minister of Transport Alexis Vafeadis and the Director General of the Ministry of Finance, Andreas Zachariadis, are expected to attend the session.
The matter was officially raised by MP Fotini Tsiridou, following strong reactions from car importers who claim the market has effectively frozen since the program was terminated without warning in early April.
Today, Minister Vafeadis is expected to clarify the rationale behind his ministry’s decision to halt the previous subsidy scheme for electric vehicle purchases—a move that has left potential buyers and businesses in limbo, as no replacement plan has been announced to date.
Speaking to Brief last week, Minister Vafeadis explained that the Department of Road Transport (TOM) has already submitted a study to his office. However, he has requested several revisions to ensure the new plan can better accommodate a wider segment of the population.

According to the Minister, the goal is to bring a revised proposal before the Council of Ministers as soon as possible—one that takes into account both the shortcomings and the data of the previous scheme. The revised version is intended to offer broader coverage and be more inclusive for those who were left out under the earlier model.
