€250,000 Allocated for Expansion of Kiti, Xylotymbou, and Achna Industrial Areas
This decision follows the approval of the allocation by the Council of Ministers, which is expected to finalize it in their upcoming session
The Cyprus parliamentary Commerce Committee has been informed of the inclusion of a €250,000 budget allocation in the 2025 state budget to expand the industrial areas of Kiti, Xylotymbou, and Achna. This decision follows the approval of the allocation by the Council of Ministers, which is expected to finalize it in their upcoming session.
Kyriakos Hadjiyiannis, Chairman of the Commerce Committee, welcomed the decision, calling it a "significant step" for local and industrial development. He emphasized the vital role of these expansions in enhancing the region’s economic growth and improving opportunities for industrial stakeholders.
DISY MP Prodromos Alabritis also praised the allocation, highlighting the importance of compensatory measures for the communities of Ormidia and Xylotymbou, which are affected by the operation of the Dhekelia power station.
Alabritis stressed the need for environmental mitigation efforts, noting that the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) will proceed with compensatory measures. "Such actions are necessary to minimize the environmental impact on residents caused by the station's operations," he stated.
AKEL MP Andreas Pasiourtides expressed satisfaction with the funding approval, emphasizing that it will support a significant number of craftsmen waiting for suitable professional conditions. He also acknowledged commitments to provide compensatory measures or infrastructure projects to the affected communities near Dhekelia.
Pasiourtides underscored the importance of balancing the environmental impact with meaningful compensation, stating, "We do not endorse a 'pollute and pay' model, but it is crucial that these areas receive something to improve their quality of life and the community’s infrastructure."
