The Future of Larnaca's Port and Marina Hangs in Balance
Legal Evaluations Awaited as Government Prepares to Potentially Sever Ties with Managing Company
Developments are expected in the coming days regarding the Larnaca port and marina, pending the opinion of the Legal Service. Although the contents of the legal opinion have not yet been made public, the prevailing scenario involves terminating the contract with the managing company. This is due to the non-submission of a guarantee by Kition, which is considered a fundamental breach of the contract.
Should the contract be terminated, the state will have to immediately take over the management of the port and marina. Under no circumstances can their operations be interrupted, even briefly. This is precisely why officials are treating these developments with utmost attention, given the severity of the situation. Before any decision is made, the state must be prepared to manage the facilities.
Specifically, the termination of the contract would take immediate effect, requiring the state to be ready to potentially renew, even temporarily, some contracts with other companies operating within the port and marina. These companies, currently under contract with the managing firm, must continue operations without disruption. Meanwhile, the Republic of Cyprus is expected to initiate legal action against the company to seek damages.
