Jordan Eyes Electricity Linkage with EU via Cyprus
In a recent meeting held in Amman, the Jordanian Minister of Energy expressed a keen interest in collaborating with Cyprus to establish an electricity linkage with the European Union. This proposal was discussed during an official visit of the Cypriot President to Jordan, wherein Cyprus’s Energy Minister, George Papanastasiou, was present.
The Cypriot Ministry of Energy, Commerce, and Industry revealed in a press release that Minister Papanastasiou held extensive discussions with his Jordanian counterparts. Their dialogue centered around strengthening bilateral ties across various domains such as energy, trade, investments, and business collaborations.
Papanastasiou held separate meetings with the Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Saleh Ali Al-Kharabsheh, and Minister of Industry, Trade, and Supply, Yousef Shamali.
The energy ministers explored the progress both countries have made in the realm of renewable energy and energy conservation. The discussions also emphasized the potential to augment energy collaboration between the two nations.
Saleh Ali Al-Kharabsheh, the Jordanian Energy Minister, underscored the importance of establishing an electrical linkage with the EU through Cyprus, as he voiced his eagerness to partner in this sector. In order to actualize the Memorandum of Understanding signed by Cyprus and Jordan in 2014, which aimed to promote energy cooperation, the ministers agreed to set up a technical committee. This committee is expected to devise a roadmap featuring specific steps in electricity and natural gas sectors, considering existing collaborations with other regional nations in particular projects.
In addition, Minister Papanastasiou and Minister Shamali held discussions focusing on bilateral trade development that would be mutually beneficial, particularly encouraging private initiatives to foster partnerships across both service and product sectors. They agreed to sign a Cooperation Memorandum detailing specific trade sectors wherein Cyprus and Jordan could amplify collaboration.
Concluding the series of meetings in Amman, the Jordanian Businessmen Association hosted a working lunch attended by numerous local entrepreneurs. During the event, Minister Papanastasiou highlighted and discussed a range of investment opportunities in Cyprus, spanning sectors such as renewable energy, hydrocarbons, tourism, education, healthcare, shipping, information and communication technologies, professional services, real estate, and investment funds.
