Larnaca–Brussels Direct Is Back: Aegean to Operate Route for Cyprus EU Council Presidency

Re-tender at €4.7m draws sole bid. Flights are planned to start in December.

Cyprus will restore a direct air link between Larnaca and Brussels ahead of its EU Council Presidency, officially starting 1 January 2026. According to the tender outcome, Aegean Airlines submitted the sole qualifying bid under a PSO (Public Service Obligation) scheme and is expected to sign with the Cyprus Department of Civil Aviation in the coming days. Flights are planned to start in December. The route will connect Cyprus to the heart of the EU during a peak policy and events window.

The government, the Secretariat for the Cyprus EU Presidency and competent bodies worked with the European Commission to structure the route as a Public Service Obligation. An initial tender (budget €3.7m) launched 28 March and closed 28 April drew no bids. A re-tender with an increased budget of €4.7 million closed 30 October, attracting a single offer from Aegean.
