Limassol Port Expansion – A Revamped Plan for Terminal 2 (Vasiliko)
Cyprus Ports Authority Proposes Updated Extension Plan with Environmental Considerations
The Cyprus Ports Authority has submitted a revised plan for the expansion of Limassol Port – Terminal 2 (Vasiliko) to the Environmental Authority, which has now opened it for public consultation until January 21, 2024.
The revised Environmental Impact Assessment Study (EIAS) essentially updates the study conducted in 2017, which received a positive assessment from the Environmental Authority for the expansion of Limassol Port – Terminal 2 (Vasiliko).
It is noteworthy that the initial expansion primarily aimed to serve the emergency needs of the FSRU vessel, which will be permanently moored on jetties in the open sea west of the port for the import, storage, and regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
The extension mainly involved extending the existing windward (south) breakwater eastwards by 705 meters, constructing a new leeward breakwater 560 meters east of the existing one, building a new jetty at the site of the existing leeward breakwater, creating a new 15-meter deep harbor basin, and steady moorings on the north side of the harbor basin. According to the new EIAS, the Cyprus Ports Authority has modified the above design and its intended uses, planning the port extension within the same eastern limits with revetments on the internal sides of the breakwaters and the north part of the new harbor basin.
The proposed spatial plan initially prepared by the Cyprus Ports Authority and adapted by the study's authors includes adjustments primarily to the extension of the windward breakwater, reduction of the floor width on the southern revetment, and increase in the curvature radius of the approach channel.
The main goals and components of the project are as follows:
-
Dismantling the last 400-meter section of the existing windward breakwater and extending it by 1,200 meters with a different layout.
-
Constructing a new 275-meter leeward breakwater.
-
Building a 230m x 125m jetty at the site of the existing leeward breakwater.
-
Extending the revetment west of the existing harbor basin by 115 meters.
-
Extending the revetment north of the existing harbor basin by 50 meters.
-
Constructing a new 385-meter revetment north of the new harbor basin.
-
Constructing a new 195-meter revetment east of the new harbor basin.
-
Constructing a new 1,035-meter revetment on the southern breakwater.
-
Deepening the new harbor basin to -15 meters.
-
Deepening between the existing and new harbor basins to -13 meters.
-
Deepening the entrance/approach channel to a depth of -16.5 meters.
-
Remodeling the river mouth – Open channel.
