What’s Changing in the Management and Operation of Marinas in Cyprus

Cyprus Parliament Approves New Law Modernizing Marina Regulations

The Cyprus Parliament, with 40 votes in favor, approved a bill to modernize and enhance the existing legislation governing marinas.

The new law aims to facilitate marina operations while introducing measures to improve their management and sustainability. The Deputy Ministry of Tourism is designated as the competent authority for implementing the legislation.

Updated Regulations Include:

  • Fee Collection: Establishes clear guidelines for collecting fees for boat stays in marinas.

  • Waste Management: Mandates the installation of waste collection systems for boats and ensures the provision of refueling facilities.

  • Designated Moorings: Introduces defined areas for the anchoring of recreational boats.

  • Increased Penalties: Raises fines for violations of marina-related laws.

The legislation includes specific provisions for boats belonging to state authorities, exempting them from marina fees for the duration specified in marina lease agreements.

Additionally, the law facilitates the use of seaplanes by creating designated maritime zones for their operation, regulated under the Civil Aviation Law.

A notable change involves allowing marina operators to seek court orders to prevent the departure of boats that fail to pay marina usage fees.
