Massive Drop in Car Sales Amid Takata Airbag Recall Crisis

Vehicle importers face mounting financial pressure as airbag shortages delay sales and frustrate customers across Cyprus.

Car sales in Paphos have plummeted in recent weeks due to widespread vehicle recalls, according to Andreas Siikkis, President of the Car Dealers Association in Paphos.

Speaking to CNA, Mr. Siikkis stated that several thousand cars have been recalled, not only over the Takata airbag issue but also for other reasons, including fuel tank and brake defects.

He noted that delays in the arrival of replacement airbags have created serious problems for vehicle importers.

Specifically, he explained that some new car companies are replacing airbags only for the vehicles they sold as new, while second-hand cars imported from Japan remain without replacements, as the new airbags have yet to arrive.

The delay, Mr. Siikkis added, is causing major difficulties for dealers, who face complaints from customers and are unable to sell cars that require airbag replacements.

These factors have led to a significant decline in car sales.

Additionally, the Car Dealers Association has appealed to the government and the relevant ministry to pressure suppliers to expedite the delivery of new airbags to Cyprus. These would then be distributed to car dealers to install on all affected vehicles with Takata airbags at no cost.

When asked about the severity of the situation, Mr. Siikkis said it is worrying, as most importers are now holding large stocks of unsold cars, creating financial strain for their businesses.

As for car rentals, he noted that the market remains stable due to the ongoing tourist season.
