PASIKA Warns of Impact from Rising Commodity Prices

The Association Calls for Support in Upcoming Municipal Elections

The continuous rise in commodity prices is severely undermining the purchasing power of citizens and summer visitors to recreational centers, reports the Pan-Cyprian Association of Recreational Center Owners - PASIKA. The association urges recreational center owners to support their peers' candidacies in the upcoming municipal elections to ensure they have a voice in the new Municipal Councils.

In a statement, PASIKA highlights that the implementation of a zero VAT rate on certain food items, such as pork, has long been ineffective. The association notes that price increases were imposed from the outset, resulting in higher purchase costs for recreational center owners who also cannot claim back the VAT. Consequently, the state is losing revenue as it no longer collects the 5% VAT.

The statement also points out that unwarranted delays in reducing fuel prices further erode people's purchasing power. Additionally, high energy costs (electricity and liquefied petroleum gas) play a significant role in this scenario.

PASIKA criticizes the government's contradictory actions, such as announcing support for mountainous areas while Cyta plans to close its branch in Kakopetria.

Moreover, PASIKA addresses the chronic shortage of both skilled and unskilled personnel. It emphasizes the need to staff the relevant departments of the Ministry of Labour that handle employment applications and calls for genuine cooperation with local municipalities.

The association also expresses concern over local government reform and its implications, stating it has proposals for managing organic and solid waste.

"These issues have motivated PASIKA members to run for positions in various municipal councils in the upcoming elections," the statement concludes.
