Nikos Christodoulides stated tonight that discussions regarding the electric grid connection are progressing, while responding to criticism that the government has not made decisions on the matter. He noted that "some are thinking about the next elections, while the government is thinking about the next generations."

In comments to journalists upon his arrival at an event organized by the Pancyprian Refugees Committee in Agioi Anargyroi, the President was asked to respond to political parties’ accusations that the government is delaying decisions on the electric interconnection project. He said, "It perfectly fits the narrative that some are thinking about the next elections, while we, as the government, are thinking about the next generations.

I’ve noticed these strong positions — I am not referring to the parties now — some are very much in favor, others are strongly opposed. I wonder where all of this comes from. In any case, it doesn’t concern me at all.

“Our discussions are moving forward positively. We are working on specific aspects. There is progress, and we will make our final decisions based solely on one factor: serving the interests of the Cypriot people.”

He emphasized that the project is significant, as it impacts future generations. “This is something that interests us deeply, so our decisions will be prudent, taking all data into account. No matter what some say about delays or indecision, we are concerned with future generations, not the next elections.”

President Christodoulides also mentioned that on September 19, he will travel to Athens to meet with the Greek Prime Minister, with one of the main topics being the electric grid project. "We are in daily contact, both yesterday and the day before, regarding this issue," he added.

When a journalist noted that Israel expressed support for the project while Turkey has protested, the President responded, "I don’t wish to comment on Turkey’s statements; they happen daily."

“What is important is the recognition from the United States of the role of the Republic of Cyprus in a region of particular geostrategic importance. We always work with a positive approach. Turkey does not dictate our decisions, nor do we react to what Turkey does or doesn’t do. We work based on a positive outlook, and I am pleased that the role of the Republic of Cyprus is being acknowledged.”

Regarding Israel’s involvement, President Christodoulides said, “I have seen the relevant statement from their Minister of Energy. Let me clarify that the project currently concerns the electric connection between Greece and Cyprus. We are discussing specific details, there is progress, and other countries have shown interest. My trip yesterday to the UAE was not by chance.”

When asked about his recent visit to the United Arab Emirates and whether there were discussions on energy cooperation, the President confirmed, "We certainly discussed collaboration in the energy sector, including the electric interconnection project."

In response to a question about a possible government reshuffle, the President said, “There is no such issue; I have already made my position clear.”
