Takata Investigative Committee Lasted Just 7 Days – Reasons for Its Cancellation
Cyprus Cancels Previous Committee Amid Conflict of Interest Concerns
Following a recommendation by the President of the Republic, the Attorney General has approved the appointment of a new investigative committee to examine matters related to Takata airbags.
As a result, the Council of Ministers has revoked the appointment of the previous committee, which occured in February 26.
Speaking on the radio, government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the decision was made to avoid any legal interpretations that could potentially limit the investigation’s scope. He further noted that the original committee, appointed by the Council of Ministers, may have encountered obstacles that would require legal intervention to proceed further.
Despite the government’s official explanation, recent developments suggest that authorities reconsidered the initial appointments due to a potential conflict of interest involving one of the committee members.
Specifically, the decision to appoint a new committee was influenced by concerns over the selection of one of the three outgoing members, Kostas Pampallis. His wife previously served as Minister of Transport during the period under investigation.
Although Pampallis’ integrity was not questioned, it was deemed appropriate to withdraw the committee’s appointment to ensure that no doubts were cast over its work.
The issue of a potential conflict of interest was first raised last week by a news website, which highlighted the (former) minister’s involvement as a possible obstacle to the committee's work.
