Vehicle Registration Renewals for 2025 Begin

Everything You Need to Know About Renewing Your Vehicle License in Cyprus Before March 11

Vehicle registration renewals for 2025 begin today. According to the Road Transport Department (RTD), the final deadline for vehicle registration renewal in Cyprus is Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at midnight.

Minister of Transport, Communications, and Works Alexis Vafeadis announced on Saturday that the Ministry is preparing decrees related to vehicle recalls following issues with defective Takata airbags. These decrees will be submitted to the Legal Service for review next week.

Regarding technical inspections (MOT) and vehicle license renewals, the Minister clarified that vehicles listed on the RTD website as subject to recalls—such as Mazda Demio and Honda models—can still pass MOT inspections, as the handling of these cases has not yet been finalized.

However, another category of recalled vehicles, predominantly of European origin, will face restrictions. Owners of these vehicles have been repeatedly notified by distributors to address recall issues. For these cases, vehicle licenses will only be renewed once the recall work is completed.

As stated in an RTD announcement, vehicle licenses can be renewed for periods of three, six, nine, or twelve months. Renewals made after the March 11, 2025 deadline will incur a penalty, comprising a €10 fixed fee plus 10% of the road tax amount due for 2025.

To renew a vehicle license, owners must have a valid MOT certificate and insurance coverage.

RTD Advice for Avoiding Delays

The RTD urges the public to renew their vehicle licenses well in advance of the deadline to prevent system overload, which could lead to inconvenience.

Owners who renewed their vehicle licenses for 2024 but do not intend to renew them for 2025 must submit a Vehicle Immobilization Notice to the RTD. This can be done online via the RTD website. Failure to do so will result in continued liability for road tax payments.

Vehicles for which licenses were not renewed for 2024 and have not been declared immobilized will be removed from the RTD register if outstanding fees for 2024 are not paid and licenses for 2025 are not renewed by the March 11, 2025 deadline.

In cases where a vehicle has been destroyed, owners must submit a cancellation application (Form TOM 98A) along with a Destruction Certificate issued by an authorized vehicle waste processing facility to avoid future road tax obligations.

Vehicle licenses can only be renewed online throughout the year, except for vehicles belonging to embassies, large families, quarries, vintage vehicles with special licenses (€25 annual fee), UN vehicles, and other organizations with exemption codes. Owners of these vehicles must visit RTD offices for license renewal.

Vehicle owners will not receive renewal notifications. It is essential to update contact details in the RTD register to receive information regarding recalls and other vehicle-related updates.
