Christodoulides Visits Lebanon for Energy and Regional Stability Talks

Key discussions on Cyprus–Lebanon relations come ahead of the Cypriot EU Council Presidency.

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides travels to Lebanon today, Wednesday, with energy cooperation and broader regional issues at the centre of his visit. Speaking on Tuesday, he hinted at forthcoming announcements on “two important matters.”

In a written statement, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis described the trip as “particularly significant, at a time when cooperation, mutual trust, and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean carry even greater weight.”

According to Mr Letymbiotis, President Christodoulides’ presence in Beirut forms part of the Cyprus Republic’s ongoing efforts to deepen its relations with countries in the region, and with Lebanon specifically—“a key partner with whom we share historically friendly ties, common challenges, and strategic interests,” as he noted.

Strengthening Cyprus–Lebanon Cooperation and Regional Stability

As part of this continued effort to enhance bilateral relations, Mr Letymbiotis said that the President’s visit to Beirut will include specific announcements relating to energy cooperation and wider regional aspects, “affirming the Cyprus Republic’s steady commitment to bolstering security and stability in the region.”

The President is expected to arrive in Beirut at 11 a.m., where he will be received by Lebanon’s Minister of Public Works and Transport, Ali Hamieh (Fayez Rassamni in the original statement).

He will then proceed to the Presidential Palace for a private meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. Expanded talks will follow, after which the two leaders will make statements at 12:30 p.m.

President Christodoulides is expected to attend an official luncheon and depart the Lebanese Presidential Palace at 2 p.m.

“The visit follows an especially active and productive period of contacts between the two countries, reflecting the strengthened momentum of our bilateral relations. Within this framework, there will be an exchange of views on regional developments, security and stability issues, as well as the progress of cooperation in areas of mutual interest,” the Government Spokesperson stressed.

He added that Cyprus places consistent importance on supporting Lebanon’s resilience and stability, a factor he described as crucial for the wider region.

At the same time, Mr Letymbiotis noted that the visit provides an opportunity to discuss further strengthening cooperation within EU–Lebanon relations, particularly ahead of Cyprus assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. “As the EU member state closest to Lebanon, Cyprus remains firmly committed to reinforcing the EU–Lebanon partnership,” he said.

President Christodoulides will be accompanied in Lebanon by the Government Spokesperson, the Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, National Security Advisor Tasos Tzionis, Director of the President’s Diplomatic Office Doros Venezis, and other officials.
