The marathon three-day debate on the Cyprus state budget 2026 in the House of Representatives plenary session concluded shortly before 2 p.m.
The state budget for 2026 was approved with 37 votes in favour and 19 against.
Those voting in favour were DISY, ELAM, DIKO, EDEK, and DIPA. Independent MPs Andreas Themistocleous, Andreas Apostolou, and Michalis Giakoumis voted in favour.
Those voting against were AKEL, the Green Party, Alexandra Attalidou, and Costis Efstathiou.
The 2026 budget provides, among other things, for primary expenditure of €10.7 billion, representing an increase of approximately €508 million, or 5.0%, compared with last year. Development expenditure is projected to rise by 4.7% in 2026 compared with 2025, while social benefits are set to increase by 6.7%, including spending on education, health, and social welfare.
A total of 92 amendments were submitted. Among the most significant approved amendments were those providing for the cutting of any expenditure related to the privatisation of public organisations and state-owned enterprises, as well as government departments and services, with the exception of spending related to the development of the Troodos area, the Cyprus Stock Exchange, and the Larnaca Marina.
In addition, funds were earmarked for the master plan of the Vasilikos area, the construction of Phase A of Macedonia Avenue, the southern extension of Akadimias Avenue, the allocation of credits for primary roads in municipalities, and the earmarking of amounts related to housing benefits, social welfare, construction projects, and solidarity fund actions.
