Electric and Hybrid Vehicle Market Sees Growth

The Share Of Electric Vehicles Increased From 4.8% To 5.2%, While The Share Of Hybrid Vehicles Rose From 43.3% To 50.8%.

Total motor vehicle registrations reached 4,733, marking an increase of 22.1%.

Cypriots are slowly but steadily shifting toward the purchase of electric and hybrid vehicles, with figures released today by the Statistical Service highlighting the increase in registrations of these types of vehicles during the January–April 2026 period.

Electric vehicles are powered by one or more electric motors and rely exclusively on electrical energy stored in rechargeable batteries.

Hybrid vehicles combine two different power sources for propulsion: a conventional internal combustion engine (petrol or diesel) and one or more electric motors, supported by a battery system.

According to the Statistical Service, total motor vehicle registrations reached 4,733 in April 2026, recording a 22.1% increase compared to 3,877 in April 2025.

Passenger saloon car registrations increased by 24.2% to 3,632 from 2,924 in April 2025.

The main developments recorded in vehicle registrations during the January–April 2026 period, compared to the corresponding period of 2025, are summarized below:

(a) The total number of registered vehicles increased by 15.1% during January–April 2026, reaching 18,570 compared to 16,133 during the same period in 2025.

(b) Registrations of passenger saloon cars increased by 14.0%, reaching 14,259 compared to 12,509 during the corresponding period of 2025.

Out of the total passenger saloon cars, 4,800 or 33.7% were new vehicles, while 9,459 or 66.3% were used vehicles. Rental cars specifically recorded a decrease of 14.8%, dropping from 1,551 to 1,321.

(c) The share of petrol-powered passenger saloon cars within this category fell to 35.6% during January–April 2026, compared to 42.9% during the corresponding period in 2025. The share of diesel-powered vehicles also declined from 9.0% in 2025 to 8.5% in 2026.

In contrast, the share of electric vehicles increased from 4.8% to 5.2%, while the share of hybrid vehicles rose from 43.3% to 50.8%.

(d) Bus registrations increased to 84 during January–April 2026, compared to 44 during the same period in 2025.

(e) Registrations of goods transport vehicles increased to 2,263 during January–April 2026, compared to 1,921 during the corresponding period in 2025, recording an increase of 17.8%.

More specifically, light goods vehicles increased by 13.4% to 1,781, road tractors (trailers) by 19.2% to 87, heavy goods vehicles by 34.7% to 287, and rental vehicles by 66.2% to 108.

(f) Registrations of mopeds under 50cc decreased to 43 during January–April 2026, compared to 80 during the same period in 2025.

(g) Registrations of motorcycles over 50cc increased by 21.5% to 1,666 during January–April 2026, compared to 1,371 during the same period in 2025.

The data collected concerns new motor vehicle registrations as recorded by the Department of Road Transport.

Registrations are presented by category, brand, energy type, new or used status, engine capacity, country of manufacture, and country of origin.
