Green Light for Kato Pyrgos Fishing Shelter

€6.1 Million Project Tender Launched

Procedures are underway for the definitive resolution of the silting problem and the upgrade of an infrastructure of strategic importance for Tillyria.

The Department of Public Works has launched the tender for the Improvement of the Kato Pyrgos Fishing Shelter, with a total budget of €6.1 million plus VAT. The project's expenditure will be covered by national funds through the budget of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, "the project, which was promoted by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research in cooperation with the Department of Public Works and the community of Kato Pyrgos, constitutes a long-standing demand of the region and aims to definitively address the problems affecting the operation of the Kato Pyrgos Fishing Shelter, most notably the problem of silting, while simultaneously upgrading an infrastructure of strategic importance for fishing activity and the economic life of the area."

"Within the framework of the project," it is noted, "interventions are planned for the breakwaters, the installation of a seawater renewal and pumping system, as well as the dredging of the harbor basin, aiming to improve mooring conditions, enhance vessel safety, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the shelter."

The tender was launched following the completion of the required studies and the securing of all necessary permits and approvals.

"With its implementation, the Kato Pyrgos Fishing Shelter is expected to further strengthen its role as a key infrastructure for fisheries and the local economy, while contributing to the upgrade of the coastal area, creating better prospects for professional fishermen, and fostering the sustainable development of the wider Tillyria region," it is emphasized.

The project is part of the Action Plan for Tillyria and Cyprus's First Green Community, implemented by the Nikos Christodoulides Government. This plan includes a series of interventions for the revitalization of the area, supporting the primary sector, protecting the environment, and improving the residents' quality of life. The project for the First Green Community started in 2024 and is coordinated by the Deputy Minister to the President, Irene Piki, with the support of the Secretariat for the Coordination and Support of Government Work and the active involvement of the Advisor to the President of the Republic, Dr. Spyros Stylianou.

At the same time, it is pointed out that "within the framework of the actions implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment in the region, important interventions have already been completed, such as the creation of a Green Kiosk to promote recycling and the maintenance and upgrade of the dam."

Additionally, several measures have been pushed forward: the reinforcement of Irrigation Departments by €100,000 through the doubling of the relevant budget under the "De Minimis Aid Scheme for Addressing Problems of Irrigation Departments"; the implementation of an increased fuel subsidy for the professional farmers and livestock breeders of Tillyria; the provision of training and technical support to producers; as well as special arrangements that prioritize remote and border areas through Grant Schemes and the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy 2023-2027.

Furthermore, according to the existing planning, the launch of the tender for the study, construction, and operation of a community composter, with an estimated budget of approximately €850,000, is expected within the second half of 2026.

"These interventions are part of the broader design for upgrading the Tillyria region, with an emphasis on strengthening infrastructure, the primary sector, and the sustainable management of natural resources," the announcement concludes.
