The Academy of Mathematical Excellence and Innovation Opens in Paphos

Talented students embark on an advanced educational journey blending mathematics with cutting-edge science and technology.

The Academy of Mathematical Excellence and Innovation (AMAK) officially launched on Saturday, marking a significant collaboration between the Municipality of Paphos and the American University of Beirut Mediterraneo (AUB Mediterraneo).

According to an announcement by the Municipality of Paphos, the first AMAK students—gifted boys and girls from all educational levels (primary, middle, and high school)—entered the AUB Mediterraneo campus to begin their studies in a high-level academic environment.

Under the guidance of Dr. Georgios Charalambous, Lecturer in Mathematics and Secretary of the Cyprus Mathematical Society, the students are introduced to a new way of thinking rooted in polymathy, integrating mathematics with cutting-edge scientific and technological fields.

Opening the program, Dr. Charalambous emphasized the importance of an interdisciplinary approach: “Mathematics is not just an academic discipline—it is the language of the universe and of truth, the order within chaos. Through AMAK, we aim to cultivate creative thinking, polymathy, and the ability to analyze and solve problems across a wide range of scientific domains,” he said.

Mayor of Paphos, Phedonas Phedonos, highlighted that the establishment of AMAK within the university setting will provide children with the inspiration to love learning and to adapt to a world where knowledge evolves rapidly.

He added: “Until now, our society has mainly celebrated excellence related to the body and athletic performance. The time has come to promote excellence of the mind and to support the participation of children with advanced skills and abilities, regardless of economic or social background.”
