May Deadline Set for Announcing Cyprus's Higher Education Strategy
President Christodoulides Announces Strategic Educational Reforms
The complete strategy for the reorganization and improvement of higher education in Cyprus is set to be announced by May, President Nikos Christodoulides declared on Wednesday. His announcement came during his address at the naming ceremony of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) rectorate building in Limassol, which was christened the “Christodoulos Sozos Rectorate Building”, and during the foundation stone laying of the new fine arts department laboratory building.
In his speech, President Christodoulides emphasized that providing substantial support to all public and private university institutions is a strategic goal of the government. He noted, "As a government, we invest in quality education and will soon publicize - by May at the latest - our Strategy for Tertiary Education, currently in the consultation phase." He mentioned a recent meeting held in the presence of the Ministers of Education, Foreign Affairs, Finance, Interior, and Labor for this purpose.
President Christodoulides highlighted that a nation's focus on education and youth represents the most substantive investment for its prosperity, stating, "This is precisely why we have set the 'Human Pillar' as a key component of our educational program, aiming at a human-centered education and the promotion of culture for tomorrow's citizens."
Among the emblematic actions of the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth's Action Plan for 2024 is the “Comprehensive Strategy for the Reorganization and Improvement of Higher Education”.
Significant reforms, including the issue of English language proficiency, are necessary, he added, to attract international students, considering the existing competition.
Additionally, President Christodoulides continued, specific goals have been set to ensure the quality of Cyprus's higher education, such as linking higher education with the labor market, noting CUT's significant role in this endeavor.
He also mentioned the goal of promoting university education as a high-quality and attractive international academic destination, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs playing a role in this process.
