Nutrition Mission: Health Minister Outlines New Strategy to Curb Junk Food Ads

Targeting “Ultra-Processed” Foods and Childhood Obesity, the Ministry of Health Launches a Multi-Front Campaign to Reshape Cyprus’s Dietary Habits.

The Nutrition Shift: Health Minister Targets Ultra-Processed Food

The Ministry of Health remains committed to promoting policies and actions that encourage healthy eating, stated Minister of Health Neofytos Charalambides during his address at a press conference on Thursday at the University of Nicosia, marking National Nutrition Day.

Dietary habits are a decisive factor for the health of current and future generations, affecting development, disease prevention, and the overall quality of life of the population,” he noted. He added that “adopting healthy standards from a young age contributes to the formation of positive behaviors with a long-term impact. Conversely, the increased consumption of ultra-processed foods and low nutrient intake are linked to an increased risk of chronic diseases and a significant burden on public health and healthcare systems.”

The Minister emphasized that the Ministry recognizes the critical role of nutrition in improving health and is developing partnerships with relevant stakeholders to promote healthy eating habits.

In this context, he continued, “comprehensive national strategies have been developed for the prevention and management of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, as well as for improving the population's quality of life through healthy nutrition and physical activity.”

These strategies include actions for obesity prevention, the adoption of a healthy lifestyle, the strengthening of health literacy, and the creation of a supportive environment,” he pointed out.

Preventative Care: Ministry to Shield Children from Unhealthy Ads

Focusing on the prevention of chronic diseases from childhood, the Minister explained that the Ministry’s services conduct annual screenings in schools, alongside information campaigns regarding the benefits of healthy eating and exercise. He noted that recent educational events were held for Technical School students in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, while new informational materials regarding ultra-processed foods are currently in production.

Furthermore, in collaboration with the Cyprus Dietetic and Nutrition Association, a guide for parents and guardians on managing childhood body weight is being prepared.

Additionally, Charalambides revealed that the government is studying the implementation of policies based on best practices from other European countries. These include protecting children from the advertising of unhealthy foods and improving access to healthy dietary options and physical activity.

The implementation of these policies requires the cooperation of the state, the food industry, professional organizations, and social partners,” he stressed.

Closing his remarks, the Minister urged the public to discover the power of nutrition as a tool for health and well-being through valid and scientifically documented sources. “At the Ministry of Health, we remain focused on promoting policies and actions that encourage healthy eating and physical activity, aiming for a healthier and more resilient society.”
