Young Scientists Shine in DNA Day Essay Competition

Two Students Win Accolades in a Nationwide Contest Aimed at Promoting Understanding of Genetics and Disease Heredity, Organized by Medicover Genetics With Educational Support

Two students have triumphed in the essay writing competition for World DNA Day, celebrated on April 25th. The contest, organized by Medicover Genetics, Cyprus, and supported by the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth, aimed to raise awareness about the significance of DNA and how genetic information can lead to understanding hereditary diseases.

According to Medicover Genetics, Cyprus, the competition invited students from public and private high schools and technical schools (ages 16-19) to participate in the Pan-Cypriot Essay Writing Competition dedicated to World DNA Day.

A team of experts in genetics and communication evaluated all submissions.

The first prize was awarded to Angeliki Charitonos from Acropolis High School in Nicosia, under the guidance of biology teacher Charis Georgakaki Pieri. The second prize went to Naya Al Sunna from Pascal English School in Larnaca, mentored by biology teacher Angeliki Pantziarou.

According to the organizers, the two winners will receive their awards soon, and their essays will be posted on the Medicover Genetics website later. They will also have the opportunity to visit the Medicover Genetics laboratories in Nicosia.

Additionally, two other students received honorary awards, and four more received commendations for their exceptional essays.

"It's an honor that this initiative was supported by the Cyprus Committee for Biology Assessment and the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Youth of Cyprus," stated Professor Philippos Patsalis, CEO of Medicover Genetics, Cyprus. He added, "The level of student participation in the Contest was impressive, and we recognize their hard work, diligence, and dedication to thorough research around the topic and the writing of their reports."
