The Button You Should Press After an ATM Withdrawal to Protect Yourself

Why Security Experts Recommend This Often Overlooked Precaution

Digital wallets on our smartphones have become the go-to method for transactions, replacing traditional payment methods for most purchases. Studies have shown that digital cards are generally more secure than physical ones.

However, some individuals still prefer cash payments and continue to use ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) for withdrawals when needed. To ensure safe ATM use, banks advise customers never to share their PIN codes and to avoid pressing the four-digit PIN with a single finger, as this could make it easier for fraudsters to observe and steal the code. Instead, users should shield the keypad with one hand to block the view from hidden cameras or nearby individuals.

Before inserting a card, users should check the machine for any unusual attachments at the card slot, as criminals sometimes install skimming devices to clone card information.

A lesser-known yet highly effective security measure is pressing the ‘Cancel’ button after completing a transaction and retrieving the cash.

Why Pressing 'Cancel' Can Prevent Fraud

The Spanish website La Grada cited information from the Bank of Spain, emphasizing that one of the biggest risks associated with ATMs is the exposure of personal and financial data.

“Pressing the cancel button is one of the most effective strategies for preventing fraud across Spain,” the report states. ATM receipts often contain sensitive information, including account balances or partial card numbers, which fraudsters can exploit for unauthorized transactions.

By pressing ‘Cancel,’ users can minimize the risk of their data being misused.

For additional security, experts recommend using mobile banking apps to check balances and transaction history instead of printing receipts or receiving them via email.

Many users unknowingly leave transactions incomplete or fail to check their surroundings before using an ATM. Pressing ‘Cancel’ ensures the process is securely finalized, reducing potential security risks.
