Cyprus' Vulnerable Households Face Major Climate Risks
Cyprus Will Be Among the European Countries With the Heaviest Climate Impacts on Vulnerable Households
A new article by Professor Theodoros Zachariadis, published by the Cyprus Institute in its Policy Comment series titled "Addressing Climate Change is Good Economic and Social Policy," discusses the economic impacts of climate change. Among other points, the article notes that Cyprus is expected to be one of the European countries where vulnerable households will experience the most severe climate impacts.
In this article, the professor presents recent findings from scientific studies regarding the economic impacts of climate change. He highlights that newer studies not only predict much more negative effects of climate change on the economy compared to earlier analyses but also estimate that Cyprus will be among the European countries with the heaviest climate impacts on vulnerable households.
For this reason, the article includes specific policy recommendations aimed both at reducing emissions responsible for climate change and at helping the country adapt to the changing climate.
According to Mr. Zachariadis, decisions on climate policy should take into account the significant benefits that will arise for the Cypriot economy and society from reducing dependence on fossil fuels, as well as the protection these policies can offer to the most vulnerable citizens to help them cope with the most severe impacts of the climate crisis.
The issue of climate change and its specific impacts on Cyprus and the broader region will be discussed at the upcoming international conference on the Climate Crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, co-organized by the Cyprus Institute and the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts on September 26-28 in Larnaca.
