“Out of Touch With Reality” Says Consumers’ Association About Electricity Statements

The 3% increase in electricity prices will not go unnoticed by households, says the Cyprus Consumers’ Association

The Cyprus Consumers’ Association believes that public statements suggesting the 3% increase in electricity prices will be imperceptible to households are “out of touch with reality and insult consumers' sensibilities.”

As stated in a press release by the President of the Cyprus Consumers’ Association, Marios Drousiotis, even the current prices paid by consumers are “unbearable for a large portion of the population.” An additional 3% increase cannot be described as “imperceptible,” he continues.

He adds that about three months ago, public announcements claimed that the Electricity Authority had pre-purchased fuel and emissions at low prices, “implying that these lower prices would be reflected in upcoming consumer bills.” However, he notes, consumers have not seen any reduction in their total bills — and now face an additional 3% increase.

He also points to the recent Decision No. 217/2025 by the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) regarding the installation of a Storage System in the Cyprus Electricity Grid, which raises questions and concerns among consumers that this will lead to further price hikes. On this issue, the Cyprus Consumers’ Association sent a letter to CERA dated June 23, 2025, expressing its concerns and submitting specific questions — but, as he notes, “unfortunately, no response has been given to date.”

He further mentions that as of October 1, 2025, the commercial operation of the competitive electricity market is set to begin. However, the Cyprus Consumers’ Association expresses concern that this will not lead to lower electricity prices for residential consumers.
