Cyprus Rock Climbing Festival: A New Outdoor Adventure Tradition

First-Ever Festival in Inia Draws Over 400 Participants and Showcases the Sport's Potential for Sustainable Development

The first-ever Cyprus Rock Climbing Festival took place at the climbing fields of Inia, attracting more than 400 local and international visitors. Organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment and supported by the Akamas Municipality and the Inia Community, the event received widespread acclaim for promoting rock climbing and outdoor activities.

The festival aimed to introduce rock climbing to a broader audience, encouraging participation from locals and visitors alike. It emphasized inclusivity by offering workshops for diverse groups, including families, youth with and without disabilities, and individuals with fewer opportunities. The workshops were conducted by certified instructors, allowing attendees to experience the sport firsthand.

The event also sought to engage the local community, with participants encouraged to utilize local accommodations, taverns, and shops, fostering economic growth in the region.

Activities and Highlights

Over three days, the festival offered:

  • Climbing Workshops: Technical sessions for climbers and beginners alike.

  • Competitions: A climbing contest for all skill levels in a friendly and supportive environment.

  • Cultural and Artistic Events: Art workshops, photography contests, and live music performances in the village square.

  • Presentations and Dialogues: Talks on climbers’ experiences and discussions on environmental preservation.

  • Outdoor Activities: Guided hikes and an orienteering race organized by certified experts.

One of the event's standout features was its emphasis on equality and inclusion, providing opportunities for underrepresented groups to engage with the sport.

As a non-profit event, all proceeds were allocated to maintaining existing climbing fields and creating new routes. The festival’s organizers, including the NGO Active Zone Outdoor and Mountain Sports and Rescue, expressed gratitude to participants and supporters for their role in its success.

The organizers hope the Cyprus Rock Climbing Festival will become an annual tradition, enhancing the area's reputation as a premier climbing and outdoor activity destination. They envision the festival as a cornerstone for sustainable local development, blending sports tourism with community growth.
