EU to Fund Expansion of Pedieos Linear Park in Turkish Cypriot Community
With €4.4 million in funding, the project aims to promote sustainable urban development and intercommunal cooperation in Nicosia.
The European Union will fund the extension of the Pedieos Linear Park “in the southern part of Nicosia, within the Turkish Cypriot community,” according to a European Commission announcement. The project, to be implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), aims to create “a peaceful and sustainable space where Nicosia residents can meet to walk, cycle, and enjoy nature.”
The initiative focuses on improving both the environment and the local community by developing new recreational areas, protecting and restoring the natural river ecosystem, and reducing flood and erosion risks. It will also support activities that bring people from both communities together.
Restoration works will be carried out with care to preserve the river’s natural beauty. Green pathways and elevated walkways will be used where necessary, while safeguarding local flora and wildlife.
Nicola De Michelis, Acting Deputy Director-General of the European Commission's DG REGIO, stated that “the EU supports projects that improve green spaces and promote sustainable development in cities across Cyprus. With this project, our goal is to transform the Pedieos River into an outstanding example of environmentally friendly innovation and care for nature.”
He added that the initiative will enhance residents’ quality of life and encourage better urban planning. “Projects like this demonstrate the EU’s strong commitment to environmental protection, intercommunal cooperation, and preserving nature in urban areas,” he said.
Jakhongir Khaydarov, Head of UNDP Cyprus, described the project as a reflection of UNDP’s commitment to ecosystem restoration, livelihood improvement, and the promotion of social cohesion and reconciliation.
“With this project, we not only enhance the environmental value of the area, but also create a shared space for cultural and recreational engagement. This initiative forms part of UNDP’s broader commitment to sustainable development and nature-based solutions, ensuring that both people and the planet can thrive,” he said.
The EU is expected to contribute approximately €4.4 million to the project.
The first phase of the restoration is scheduled for completion by November 2025, with full completion expected by September 2027, pending final EU confirmation. The connection to the existing Pedieos Linear Park in the southern section of the UN Buffer Zone will be carried out by the Nicosia Municipality.
The assistance programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, established under Council Regulation 389/2006, aims to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus by fostering economic development in the Turkish Cypriot community, with a focus on the island’s economic integration, improving contacts between the two communities and the EU, and preparing for the implementation of the EU acquis.
According to the Commission, the UNDP aims to support peacebuilding in Cyprus and enhance cooperation between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots by implementing a range of confidence-building measures.
