Fengaros Pauses All Activities Over Uncertainty on State Funding
Preparations for one of Cyprus’ most established cultural institutions have come to a halt, as Fengaros announced that all its activities are temporarily on hold pending clarity from the Deputy Ministry of Culture regarding state support for 2026.
The organisers confirmed that Fengaros Festival, Fengaros High and Fengaros Music Village will not proceed with planning until the ministry issues a formal statement outlining its annual support measures and a clear timeline for cultural organisations.
In a public statement, Fengaros said it had formally communicated its concerns to the Deputy Ministry but has yet to receive a response. The absence of official guidance, it noted, has created ongoing uncertainty that now threatens this year’s scheduled dates and overall planning.
As a result, the organisation said it has no alternative but to pause all preparations. Communication with international and local artists, art workers, long-term partners and potential collaborators cannot move forward without reliable information regarding funding frameworks.
Founded in 2011, Fengaros has grown into one of Cyprus’ most recognised music and arts platforms. Over the years, it has expanded beyond its flagship summer festival to include Fengaros Music Village, an educational initiative featuring workshops by local and international music professionals, and Fengaros High, a multi-month development programme supporting emerging musicians in showcasing their work.
Traditionally held in early August, the festival has previously taken place in Kato Drys in the Larnaca district and, more recently, in Kornos. Its temporary suspension marks a significant moment for Cyprus’ cultural calendar, as organisers await official clarification that will determine whether the 2026 edition and its parallel programmes can proceed as planned.
