A Green Telephone Booth Brings Ayia Napa’s Past Back to Life
Symbol of memory and community placed in Giorgos Seferis Square.
A green telephone booth has been installed in the central square of Ayia Napa, as part of actions undertaken by the Municipality of Ayia Napa to highlight the city’s cultural identity and historical memory, while enhancing public space with elements that bridge the past with the present.
According to a municipal announcement, the telephone booth, “fully restored, was recently placed in Ayia Napa’s central ‘Giorgos Seferis’ Square, following initiatives by Mayor Christos Zannettou, in cooperation with CYTA, becoming a distinctive point of reference that showcases the lifestyle of another era.”
“At a time when telephones in private homes were a rare phenomenon, the telephone booth served for decades as the primary means of communication for the local community, as well as for Cyprus as a whole,” the announcement states.
From a single, central location in the village, it adds, “the booth served the entire population, connecting Ayia Napa with the rest of Cyprus and abroad—initially through coins and later through the use of telephone cards.”
“Today, the telephone booth returns not as a communication tool, but as a symbol of memory, history, and collective experience. Its presence in public space awakens memories among older generations and offers younger people the opportunity to become familiar with the everyday life and values of previous generations,” the announcement continues.
Its placement, according to the municipality, “forms part of Ayia Napa’s broader efforts to promote the city’s cultural identity and historical memory, as well as to upgrade public space with features that connect yesterday with today.”
Mayor Christos Zannettou stated that “the Municipality continues to invest systematically in showcasing the roots and historical identity of Ayia Napa, creating spaces and points of reference that narrate the city’s journey through time.”
