Influenza and RSV Continue to Strain Cyprus Hospitals

Admissions rise in wards and HDUs as health authorities remain on alert until spring.

Hospitalisations of patients suffering from respiratory infections such as influenza and RSV remain elevated in general hospital wards across Cyprus. At the same time, High Dependency Units (HDUs) and enhanced care rooms are also filling up with patients, while visits to Accident and Emergency Departments (A&E) continue at very high levels.

Some relief is currently provided by the low number of influenza and RSV cases among children; however, an increase is expected in the coming weeks.

Specifically, according to statements made to OffsiteNews by the Press Representative of the State Health Services Organisation (OKYpY), Pambos Charilaou, there has been a significant increase in attendance at hospital A&E departments by patients suffering from seasonal infections such as Influenza A and B, as well as RSV.

At the same time, Mr Charilaou noted that admissions to general hospital wards have increased, while High Dependency Units (HDUs) and enhanced care rooms are now also full. These units mainly accommodate elderly patients and individuals with chronic conditions.

As regards children, the situation is considerably better. According to Mr Charilaou, there are currently very few paediatric admissions at Makarios Hospital, and no children hospitalised with RSV—unlike in previous years, when numerous cases were recorded.

Nevertheless, the rise in cases and, consequently, hospitalisations was anticipated by the medical community.

“This is something we expected, as every year during this period, shortly after the holiday season, increased family and social gatherings lead to a rise in cases and hospital admissions,” Mr Charilaou said.

He added that an increase in cases is expected to continue until the end of March, while reassuring that the organisation remains fully prepared.
