Kalavasos Bridge Disruption Ends on May 16

Final stage of improvement works will continue under the bridge until July without affecting traffic, says the Public Works Department.

The Limassol–Nicosia highway will reopen to traffic in mid-May, following its closure since January 30 due to repair, upgrade, and maintenance works on the Kalavasos Bridge. The final stage of the project will continue until July with works taking place under the bridge, which will not affect traffic, confirmed Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department, Andreas Diakos, speaking to OffsiteNews.

At the same time, new night-time maintenance works will begin after Easter, covering the stretch from Skarinou to Limassol and from Limassol to Petra tou Romiou.

“We are working intensively to complete the bridge upgrade on the Limassol–Nicosia highway,” said Mr. Diakos, assuring that the highway will be delivered on schedule in mid-May. “Works are proceeding normally. There was only a one-day delay during the Limassol Carnival when, due to heavy traffic congestion, the contractor opened up part of the highway. As a result, instead of being delivered on May 15, it will now reopen on May 16.”

The overall project, with a duration of 80 weeks, began in October 2023. From September 2024 to January 2025, a section of the Nicosia–Limassol highway was closed, restricting both lanes in the direction of Limassol for approximately 1 km. Since January 30, 2025, a section of the Limassol–Nicosia highway has also been closed and will remain so until May 16.

According to the Public Works Department, the entry to the highway heading towards Limassol from the old Limassol–Nicosia road at the Zygi junction remains closed. Traffic from the old road to the highway is being diverted through the Governor’s Beach junction.

If no further delays occur, the final phase of works under the bridge is expected to be completed by July 15. As Mr. Diakos reiterated, these final tasks will be carried out below the bridge and will not impact drivers.

Responding to a question about other planned projects along the Limassol–Nicosia highway, Mr. Diakos confirmed that a contract has recently been signed for additional maintenance work along the Skarinou–Limassol section and the Limassol–Petra tou Romiou stretch.

These works will include select segments of the highway and are expected to begin after Easter.

The maintenance will take place at night, from Monday to Friday, to minimize disruptions. “Since the works will be carried out overnight, they will not affect the public,” said Mr. Diakos.
