“The Living Chiofta” by Mike Hajimichael: A Different Book Launch
‘The Living Chiofta - some stories that come out of songs’ will be launched on 30 April at the Discovery Hall at the University of Nicosia
During the pandemic lockdown, creativity flourished and what started as an everyday collection of Cypriot words and memories, turned into a daily podcast. This has now evolved into a book. ‘The Living Chiofta - some stories that come out of songs’ will be launched on 30 April at the Discovery Hall at the University of Nicosia.
A 'Chiofta' in Cypriot vernacular means many things to different people. Rooted in truth, based on the oral tradition, these tales include a hint of exaggeration and satire. A 'chiofta' is a uniquely Cypriot word and tradition. It's a concept deeply embedded in Cypriot culture.
The relationship between stories and songs is explored in an exciting new book by academic, writer, singer and radio DJ, Mike Hajimichael, aka Haji Mike. The author has been telling stories through songs with his unique artistic approach for over forty years.
The book includes thirty chapters, thirty songs, and many memories brought together by Mike in his own eclectic style. Many of the songs are well known, some were discovered throughout his career, and others he wrote himself.
The book follows a chronological order, starting with 'Come Up and See Me (Make Me Smile) by the late Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, and ending with 'Wise Men', a new song by the author about the ways of the world. There are several of obscure gems in between, like 'Waikiki Welcome' by The Waikikis and a charming release called 'Tzatziki' by the late Teddy Kakanda Harrison from Kenya. The theme of the song, one of the most everyday Greek food side dishes, is like music itself, crucial.
'The Living Chiofta - some stories that come out of songs' will be available at local bookstores and online from Marathovounos Press from 30 April. Mike Hajimichael will launch the book at The Discovery Hall, University of Nicosia, at 7pm on the same day. The event will feature a live show, with surprise guests, so expect the unexpected.
