Nicosia Named European Best Cultural Capital for 2026

International rankings and Forbes feature spotlight the city’s cultural profile.

Nicosia has risen to the top of Europe, securing the title of European Best Cultural Capital / Best Cultural Destination 2026, ranking first in the international classification of the European Best Destinations organisation for 2026.

According to an announcement by the Nicosia Tourism Development Company (ETAP), this top distinction is further reinforced by an extensive feature in Forbes, which ranks Nicosia first among the ten best cultural cities in Europe, recommending it as the leading cultural destination for 2026.

The international recognition, ETAP adds, was based on a multi-level evaluation process that combined quantitative data, assessments by specialised culture and travel journalists, as well as votes from thousands of travellers from more than 130 countries.

Nicosia stood out for the richness and authenticity of its cultural heritage, its vibrant contemporary artistic scene, the high concentration of cultural infrastructure, and the overall quality of experience it offers to visitors, the announcement notes.

According to ETAP, this success is the result of a targeted strategic initiative and systematic efforts, carried out in close cooperation with the Municipality of Nicosia.

Specifically, it is noted that through the development of a clear and contemporary narrative for the city, the mapping and documentation of its cultural assets, and coordinated collaboration with the European Best Destinations organisation, ETAP Nicosia and the Municipality of Nicosia played a decisive role in achieving and securing this international distinction.

The designation of Nicosia as European Best Cultural Capital 2026, ETAP concludes, strengthens the city’s international profile, confirms its potential in culture, creativity and sustainable urban tourism, and opens new prospects for further international promotion and cooperation.
