Nicosia Protest Set for Tonight as Council Votes on Reopening Makariou to Cars

Urban collective OPU mobilizes public protest as Nicosia's local council prepares to vote on whether to reopen Makariou Avenue to car traffic.

At 18:00 this evening, the Nicosia Municipality Council is expected to vote on a contentious proposal: whether to reopen Makariou Avenue to car traffic. Ahead of the decision, the Organisation for Positive Urbanism (OPU) is calling on citizens to show up and speak out against the move, urging support for a "people-centered Nicosia."

OPU argues that reopening the central avenue to cars would not only fail to benefit businesses, but also harm the urban environment and overall quality of life. “Most people oppose opening Makariou to cars — and for good reason,” the group stated in a public call to action. “This move won’t benefit our city or its people.”

Among OPU’s key concerns are that car traffic would simply pass through without enhancing local commerce, while also degrading the urban atmosphere. The group warns that exhaust fumes would undo the cooling effects of trees and shaded sidewalks, increase air and noise pollution, and reduce the street’s appeal for walking, socializing, and outdoor leisure. Vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with disabilities would feel less safe, making the space less inclusive and welcoming.

“More cars mean fewer people strolling, shopping, or enjoying cafés,” OPU noted, adding that the decision would represent a step backwards at a time when Nicosia should be prioritizing walking, cycling, and sustainable public transport.

Founded in late 2023, OPU is a non-profit urban collective based in Nicosia. Through its pillars—urban planning, mental health, sustainable mobility, and climate resilience—OPU champions inclusive, human-centric design and public participation in shaping urban futures.

The protest will take place outside the Municipal Council building during tonight’s vote.
