What to Know Before Camping in Cyprus Forests
Authorities issue summer warning over unlicensed camping and fire hazards in protected forest areas.
The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment is reminding the public that camping within state forests without a permit, as well as lighting fires, is strictly prohibited.
In its announcement, the department reiterates that unauthorized camping in state forests is illegal and punishable under the Forest Law with imprisonment of up to one year, a fine of up to €5,000, or both. Camping is only allowed in designated campgrounds within the state forest areas.
The department notes that during the summer months, there is a growing problem of unauthorized and uncontrolled camping in areas of significant environmental value, such as the Akamas National Forest Park—a protected and ecologically sensitive zone.
Illegal camping in these areas, the department emphasizes, damages fragile ecosystems, causes pollution, and degrades the natural environment due to the improper disposal of waste. This disrupts wildlife and harms biodiversity. Particularly concerning is the fact that illegal campers often light fires, an act strictly prohibited by law. Such actions endanger not only the lives of the offenders but also threaten forested areas with potentially catastrophic wildfires and irreversible consequences.
The department stresses that lighting fires anywhere in the countryside is prohibited—except for food preparation in specially designated facilities located within organized picnic or camping sites.
According to the amended 2025 Forest Law, lighting a fire within state forests or within a 2km radius from their boundaries constitutes a criminal offense punishable by up to 12 years in prison, a fine of up to €100,000, or both.
