US Deputy Minister Affirms Strong US-Cyprus Cooperation on Russian Sanctions

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Eric Woodhouse, emphasized the robust collaboration between the United States and the Republic of Cyprus in imposing sanctions against Russia following its invasion of Ukraine.

During a recent visit to Cyprus, Woodhouse praised the nation's efforts in effectively implementing and enforcing sanctions against Russia, targeting specific individuals and entities involved in detrimental activities without adversely affecting the Cypriot people or government.

The sanctions and export control measures have significantly impacted Russia's military capabilities, materials, and funding. Despite their effectiveness, Woodhouse acknowledged that the conflict in Ukraine persists, underscoring the need for continued vigilance as Russia may attempt to circumvent these measures.

In his discussions with both government officials and representatives from the private sector, including banks, accountants, and lawyers, Woodhouse commended Cyprus for its commitment to enhancing financial sector supervision. He emphasized the importance of reducing shell company activities and upholding high standards for the effective application and enforcement of sanctions.

Expanded Sanctions

Woodhouse reaffirmed the unwavering support of the United States for the government of the Republic of Cyprus and its private sector partners in their efforts to enforce sanctions. He emphasized that the USA views the sanctions as part of a larger multilateral effort, working closely with the European Union, G7 partners, and other nations globally.

The Deputy Minister outlined the US government's commitment to expanding and intensifying sanctions as necessary, affirming that they will persist in these efforts until the aggression from Russia ceases.

The cooperation between the United States and the EU remains excellent, with Cyprus playing a vital role as an EU member state. Woodhouse underscored the unity among partners and allies, stating that collaborative efforts will continue to be a cornerstone in addressing the Russian situation.
