E-mbracing Change: Maro Manoli's Journey of Innovation for the Autism Community

A Bracelet with a Mission

A recent graduate from the University of Cyprus, specializing in Business Administration, Maro Manoli's academic background blends seamlessly with her enthusiasm for social entrepreneurship. Her venture, the "E-mbracelet", is a testament to her dedication to create lasting positive change. Developed as a discreet solution for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) struggling with noise sensitivity, the E-mbracelet emerged from a university assignment, inspired by personal connections and a drive to address real-world challenges. Recently, this groundbreaking project earned accolades at a prestigious competition, further solidifying its relevance and potential.

Our interview with Maro dives deep into the origins and aspirations behind the E-mbracelet. She recounts the moving personal experiences that catalyzed the bracelet's development, its overwhelming reception from the autism community, and the next steps for her team. Furthermore, Maro reflects on the significance of winning the "EY Gen-E Young Women Leaders Award", offers advice to budding entrepreneurs, and gives us a glimpse into her vision for the future. The narrative is not just about a product; it's a tale of empathy, determination, and the power of collaboration.

What inspired you to create the "E-mbracelet"? Was there a specific event or circumstance that led to its development?

The inspiration behind the 'E-mbracelet' sprouted in a class named 'Entrepreneurship and Innovation.' Tasked with creating an innovative product, weeks of brainstorming led us to a breakthrough moment. A team member spotlighted the sensitivity to noise often experienced by individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This struck a chord with me due to my cousin's ASD diagnosis and his struggles with noise sensitivity.

A pivotal conversation with my aunt, his mother, unveiled an opportunity to address this challenge through technology. After rigorous research and discussions with specialists, the concept of the E-mbracelet began to form. The E-mbracelet aims to provide a discreet solution to alleviate noise sensitivity in those with ASD. This journey underlines the potency of collaboration, empathy, and inventive thinking, ultimately birthing the E-mbracelet as a potential remedy to a pertinent real-world issue.

How has the autism community reacted to the introduction of this innovative product? What kind of feedback have you received?

When we introduced the innovative 'E-mbracelet' to the autism community, we initially anticipated some hesitation due to its medical and pioneering nature. However, our experience proved to be quite the opposite. Presenting the E-mbracelet to esteemed organizations like the Cyprus Autism Association and the Autism Praxis Infinity Solutions was genuinely heartening. These organizations not only embraced the concept but also expressed a strong belief in its potential. Their willingness to collaborate and contribute to bringing the E-mbracelet to life was a gratifying surprise that bolstered our confidence in the project.

The positive feedback from both organizations and the autism community at large has been an inspiring source of motivation

Equally pivotal was the response from parents and caregivers within the autism community. Engaging with these individuals allowed us to witness firsthand the impact the E-mbracelet could have on the lives of people with ASD and their families. Their enthusiasm and unwavering support were validating moments that fueled our determination. Recognizing the significance of their endorsement, we became more resolute in our pursuit of creating a product that could truly make a positive difference. The positive feedback from both organizations and the autism community at large has been an inspiring source of motivation as we continue to refine and develop the E-mbracelet.

How do you see the "E-mbracelet" evolving in the future? What's next for your team?

As we look ahead, the 'E-mbracelet' holds exciting prospects for further evolution. Following the competition, the invaluable feedback we garnered is guiding our ongoing development efforts. Currently in the initial stages, we're diligently incorporating this feedback to refine the E-mbracelet's design and functionality.

Our team's trajectory involves continuous research and collaboration with relevant organizations to ensure the best possible outcome. We're engaging in ongoing conversations to gather insights and recommendations, fostering a user-centric approach. This iterative process will enable us to craft a product that genuinely addresses the needs of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and their communities.

In the future, we envision the E-mbracelet evolving as a versatile tool with enhanced features. Our commitment lies in creating a device that not only supports noise sensitivity but also contributes positively to various aspects of daily life for those with ASD. With our steadfast dedication and ongoing partnership with ASD communities, we're dedicated to making the E-mbracelet an even more impactful and empowering solution.

What does winning the "EY Gen-E Young Women Leaders Award" mean to you and your team?

Winning the 'EY Gen-E Young Women Leaders Award' holds profound significance both for me personally and for our entire team since it provides a platform to represent Cyprus and showcase the E-mbracelet project. The recognition not only affirms my journey and achievements as a young female leader but also reinforces my dedication to inspiring and empowering other aspiring women leaders.

This award carries immense significance for our team and its mission. This recognition has not only honored our efforts but has also become a powerful platform for spreading awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The award's spotlight has shed light on the importance of our work, making the E-mbracelet project and its purpose more widely known. Through this heightened visibility, we are able to engage with a broader audience, facilitating discussions about the challenges faced by those with ASD and the solutions we're working to provide.

Maro, what advice would you give to young entrepreneurs who are just starting their journey?

For people now stepping onto the entrepreneurial path, let me share that this journey is unlike any other. While my experience in entrepreneurship might be young, my time with Junior Achievement Cyprus has ignited a profound love for it. I was fortunate enough to learn, grow and make lifelong connections through my JA journey as well as my time in the University of Cyprus.

To those still in school or university, becoming a part of the Junior Achievement Cyprus community is an opportunity to not only grasp the fundamental building blocks of entrepreneurship but also initiate your journey surrounded by like-minded individuals and equipped with essential tools.

The entrepreneurial road can be challenging, but it's through these challenges that your dreams take shape

As the Cyprus' entrepreneurial ecosystem is a thriving canvas for young entrepreneurs, now is the time to transform your ideas into reality. Yes, the entrepreneurial road can be challenging, but it's through these challenges that your dreams take shape. Whether you're sketching out a business plan, developing a product, or building a team, embrace the journey.

And lastly, do you see your future primarily in entrepreneurship, or do you see a role for yourself in larger, established businesses? Are there any new projects underway?

Having recently graduated from the University of Cyprus with a degree in Business Administration, under the guidance of exceptional educators like Ms. Daina Nicolaou, I've acquired a versatile toolkit poised to navigate the business world. While my passion lies in entrepreneurship, I also recognize the potential value in contributing to established businesses. My vision revolves around a future where I foster innovation and lead ventures of my own, yet remain open to collaborations that allow me to make a meaningful impact on a larger scale.

Currently, my focus is dedicated to the development and growth of the E-mbracelet, where our team continuously explores avenues for expansion, envisioning new features and forging partnerships to make a lasting difference in the lives of people with Autism Spectrum Disorder and their loved ones.
