Economic challenges persist globally, but Cyprus, a shimmering jewel in the Mediterranean, has the potential not just to weather the impending storm but to thrive amidst the gusts. This was the resounding sentiment at TechIsland Summit 2023's Panel Discussion No. 1 titled "Navigating the Storm: Strategies for Economic Resilience."

Hosted at the scenic Molos Seaside Park in Limassol, the summit emphasized the significance of forward-thinking strategies in leveraging the tech industry as a major pillar for the nation's economic resilience and growth.

One of the key discussions was on urban planning. With Cyprus' capacity to house up to 5 million individuals in existing residential zones, there's an impending need to craft new public housing policies. "The traffic challenge is fundamentally an urban planning predicament. The objective should be to construct densely populated yet friendly cities," the panel highlighted.

For the tech industry to truly become a cornerstone of Cyprus' economic resurgence, it's crucial to foster an environment conducive to innovation. The panel spotlighted the necessity of setting up accelerators and incubators, ensuring that budding startups in Cyprus have the support and infrastructure they need to flourish.

But beyond infrastructure, human capital is paramount. The sustainability of international business in Cyprus hinges on the up-skilling of its citizens.

Constantinos Petrides, former Minister of Finance, highlighted the strategic importance of diversified economic growth models. In addition, Konstantin Zapoleansky of Zubr Capital championed Cyprus' conducive economic atmosphere, opining that the island nation exemplifies the success of a free market economy. Lastly, Mary Harney, Ireland's former Tánaiste, underlined the importance of a harmonious relationship between enterprises and the wider community, especially in pivotal sectors such as education. Guiding the audience through this riveting discourse was moderator Philippos Soseilos, CEO and Chairman at PwC Cyprus.
