Prominent Engineers Honored at ETEK's 2023 Awards Ceremony

Celebrating the Pinnacle of Engineering Excellence Since 2015

In a grand ceremony, held as part of the Action Review event for the 2020-2023 triennium, the ETEK Engineering Award for 2023 was jointly presented to Angelos Savvidis and Lysandros Tziovanis.

Angelos F. Savvidis, an architect, was recognized for his exceptional work on the "Cyprus Planetarium," which is notably the first planetarium in Cyprus and ranks among the ten largest and most modern in Europe. This project is celebrated for its plethora of innovations, authentic design, and unique constructions. It bridges the gap between architecture and engineering science, encompassing several associated engineering fields like audiovisual systems, observatory/telescope interconnection, and dome screens. Furthermore, the planetarium stands out for its environmental-friendly and technologically advanced design. Constructed using materials and techniques that minimize environmental impact, it also optimizes energy consumption.

Dr. Lysandros Tziovanis was honored for his project titled "Optimal Unit Commitment and Economic Load Distribution Software for Cyprus's Electric System." This applied engineering work integrates innovative optimization algorithms aiming to find the best economic solution for the scheduling of conventional power generation units and Renewable Energy Sources (RES) within Cyprus's electric system. The software is already being utilized by the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (CTSO) and the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) to streamline their operations, making it a powerful tool to help achieve the national goals of the Republic of Cyprus in climate neutrality, energy efficiency, and renewable energy sources.

The Minister of Transport, Communications, and Works, Alexis Vafeiadis, presented the award to the winners, underscoring its importance. ETEK highlighted that this award, a tradition since 2015, aims to emphasize the role of engineers and showcase contemporary advancements and achievements in engineering science, primarily focusing on the positive societal and economic impacts of their applications.
