Gasoline Remains the Top Choice for Cypriots – Hybrid Cars Surpass Diesel

Car Manufacturers Are Producing and Offering More Hybrid Models, Thus Giving Buyers More Choices

In 2023, hybrid vehicles rose to second place among vehicles registered on Cypriot roads, surpassing diesel vehicles which held that position in 2022.

Specifically, according to data published by the Statistical Service, a significant majority (55.0%) of the vehicles registered in 2023 were gasoline-powered, while 18.0% were diesel-powered, 2.9% electric, and 24.1% hybrid. The corresponding percentages for 2022 were: gasoline-powered: 58.3%, diesel-powered: 21.2%, electric: 2.2%, and hybrid: 18.3%.

More Hybrid Models from Manufacturers, Importers Say

Alexis Anninos, President of the Association of Motor Vehicle Importers, commented on the data to Brief, explaining that the increase in hybrid vehicles stems not only from consumer preferences but also from a trend in the automotive industry.

He noted that car manufacturers are now producing and offering more hybrid models, thus increasing the options available in this technology, giving buyers more choices.

It should be noted that, according to Mr. Anninos, the data so far shows that the increase in the hybrid market mainly concerns mild and self-charging hybrids, as plug-in hybrids remain lower in sales even than electric vehicles.

Market Correction from Delays

Meanwhile, there was a 34.6% increase in car registrations from January to December 2023, reaching 45,494, compared to 33,795 during the same period in 2022.

Mr. Anninos pointed out that these numbers are primarily due to the correction in the supply chain, as 2022 was marked by production delays and the receipt of new vehicles.
