'Kronos 2' Gas Field Mirrors Initial Findings, Boosts Production Potential

'Kronos 2' Gas Field Mirrors Initial Findings, Boosts Production Potential

Cyprus Confirms High-Quality Gas Reserves in Exclusive Economic Zone

The Ministry of Energy confirmed the existence of the same natural gas column as initially discovered in the "Kronos 1" exploratory drilling, recorded in the evaluation drilling at "Kronos 2." The Ministry simultaneously noted the exceptional quality of the natural gas in the reservoir and its high production capacity.

Today, the Ministry announced the successful completion of the evaluation drilling operations at "Kronos 2," located within Block 6 of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Republic of Cyprus, conducted by the consortium of Eni Cyprus Limited (Operator) and TotalEnergies EP Cyprus B.V.

"The drilling, conducted 160 kilometers off the coast of Cyprus and 3 kilometers from the original exploratory drilling 'Kronos 1,' demonstrated the existence of the same natural gas column, with a productive zone within a geological formation exceeding 115 meters. It confirmed that it is an extension of the 'Kronos' deposit, with the same characteristics in carbonate rocks," the statement said.

It is added that during the drilling operations, a full production test (DST) was also conducted, which "recorded the exceptional quality of the natural gas in the reservoir, as well as the high production capacity of the reservoir, estimated to exceed 150 mmscfd (Million Standard Cubic Feet per Day) under production conditions."

"Kronos" represents the third natural gas discovery in Block 6 of the Cypriot EEZ, alongside "Calypso (2018) and "Zeus" (2022), the Ministry notes. At this stage, the Ministry of Energy and the licensing consortium are examining ways for the optimal utilization of the deposits, "which, incidentally, will concern gas supply to the Eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus, and Europe, with the cluster of discoveries expected to contribute to the acceleration of their development."

Both Eni and TotalEnergies have announced the successful completion of the "Kronos 2" operations. A full evaluation of the discovered resources will follow to determine the best development option, which will assist in natural gas supply to Europe and the region, the announcement concluded.
