Airbnb has decided to ban security cameras inside the accommodations listed on its website, the company announced, stating its intention to protect the privacy of its customers.

Previously, the accommodation rental business allowed security cameras in common areas such as hallways or living rooms, provided they were clearly visible in the property listing.

However, some customers complained on social media about discovering hidden cameras in the properties they rented, including in areas where privacy is expected.

"This update is part of the platform's efforts to simplify its policy regarding security cameras and other devices, thereby protecting the private lives of the host community and travelers," the San Francisco, California-based company stated on its website.

This new policy, along with the reinforcement of rules for outdoor security cameras, will take effect on April 30, according to the company.

"Our goal with these new rules is to provide greater clarity to the community regarding what to expect on Airbnb," said Juniper Downs, Head of Community and Partnerships, in her statement included in the announcement.

Cameras in doorbells and noise-detection devices will continue to be allowed by Airbnb for property protection, the company states.

Regarding outdoor cameras, it will be mandatory to disclose their presence and location before any booking confirmation and they will not be allowed in certain areas, such as enclosed outdoor showers or saunas, the company added.
